Types of Damage
There are several types of damage
resulting from a fire.
The first and most obvious is damage from

this condition are not salvageable.

covered in soot may possibly be salvaged. However, a

are structurally sound. If there is any doubt, these
materials should be replaced, especially if they are part of
a load-bearing structure.
Water damage from putting out the fire can
be as much a problem as fire damage. Much of a home
that suffered a fire will most likely be saturated with
water from the effort to save adjoining rooms, so that even
rooms that have not suffered fire damage may incur water
damage. Water seepage under floorboards and in side of
walls can lead to mold and mildew problems, so that
extensive cleaning and application of bleach and other odor
and mold-control substances may become necessary.

Even if a fire-damaged building seems
structurally sound, damage that may not be apparent to the
untrained eye may make it unsafe for the homeowners to
enter. Fires can release a number of hazardous
materials, including PCBs and toxic chemicals. Even
after a fire electrical lines can still be energized and
deadly.

second, to determine the damage and what repairs are needed
to bring the building into conformity with building codes
and make it legal and safe for occupancy. This type of
inspection is usually required before any repair permit can
be issued.
